THE SONG TRAPPER (2025)

MOVING IMAGE, VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE & SPATIALIZED SOUND

The Song Trapper
explores humanity's oldest navigation technologies: Voice, song, and story through digital technologies. Commissioned by Fondation Louis Vuitton for its Open Space Programme, it marks the first time Jakob Kudsk Steensen works with virtual performance and motion capture, embedding human movement as means of communication into his virtual worlds.

The video follows two mythical figures as they travel across deserts, swamps and marshes in search of traces of sounds. Nökken, a water spirit from Scandinavian folklore, once believed to guide humans through swamps with its songs, embodies ecological memory and lost oral traditions. Its counterpart, the voiceless Song Trapper, is born from advanced technologies and driven by the urge to collect data, in the form of songs and stories to make sense of its surroundings and itself.

When the two characters meet, they enter a dance that epitomizes the philosophical tensions of our technological moment. The Song Trapper attempts to imitate Nökken’s singing, but fails for lack of its own voice, while Nökken continues without audience and purpose and represents the loss of organic knowledge, intuition and collective memory. Both characters seem restless and trapped, as they carry an inherent self-conflict about their place in a changing world.

“The Song Trapper itself is a paradox made manifest: a faceless figure whose hood glows with an inner fire, draped in layered garments that blur the boundaries between organic camouflage and technological interface. Its body bristles with devices—canisters, flutes, recording apparatus—each designed to capture, archive, and remix the voices of a world where human speech has vanished. This is code as performance, memory as prosthetic, the archive walking among ruins it helped create.”

– Nora Khan in Numero Magazine.

A free-verse poem by the artist, which appears as subtitles, forms the underlying narrative of the work, shaping visual and sonic transformations. It also functioned as a creative script for the motion capture performer Iris Thomsen, who created a realtime choreography to craft the movement of the virtual characters. The poem further guided the collaboration with vocalist Lyra Pramuk, whose layered vocals form an echo the Song Trapper chases.

The work unfolds across several video game worlds created by the artist from years of environmental fieldwork, transforming scans of organisms and entire landscapes into virtual worlds. The digital characters originate in ink and watercolor drawings by Kudsk Steensen, which were translated into 3D forms through generative technologies and animated by motion capture, heightening the tension between generated and handcrafted experiences.

The exhibition extends the virtual world with soft green light, reminiscent of swamp waters, a custom-made scent by Yann Vasnier, composed of notes of seaweed, metallic rust, and salamander pheromone, and spatial sound mixed from field recordings by longtime collaborator Matt McCorkle.

The Song Trapper (2025) forms the first chapter in the artist’s multi-year project Evoker, which brings together the worlds of opera and video games. Blending personal memory with speculations about the future, it prompts reflections on a world reshaped by accelerating technology and environmental transformation.

The Song Trapper was first presented at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris from 17 October 2025 - 2 March 2026 in partnership with Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, which will host a solo exhibition by the artist in spring 2027. The first edition of The Song Trapper was acquired by the Louis Vuitton Collection.

Louis Vuitton Fondation Installation
16 October 2025 - 02 March 2026

Physically within Louis Vuitton’s Gallery 8, the 4-channel video is supported by vertical LED screens that mimic stained glass windows, and are a site specific response to Gallery 8’s chapel like qualities. Sound is further mapped onto the Gallery’s architecture, using video game technology Steensen has specialised over many years and what the artist refers to as ‘a spatial instrument’.

Elsewhere covering the walls of Gallery 8 include marsh-green-blue-brown hues that draw upon Steensen’s travels to swamp, marshes and lake waters. A custom scent made in collaboration with Yann Vasnier adds to these ecological reference, its inspirations draws from amphibians, seaweed and rust-like ingredients.

Creating The Song Trapper: Text, Code, Animation, Song

As in video games, environments transform with the Song Trapper’s gestures and vice versa; movement, sound, and landscape come together in rhythm that is led by a first person poetic narrative text by the artist. This text by Steensen is foundational for all elements within the artwork - animating The Song Trapper’s world, movement, and sounds, much like we need to animate our physical world in order to make sense of it.

Virtual performance and choreography for example, was directly influenced by Steensen’s spoken words whilst on set with actor Iris Thomsen, and rehearsed in real-time through supporting volumetric motion capture at BrainBar Studio with Producer Mikael Jaeger Jensen.
