BIO
Jakob Kudsk Steensen is a Danish artist based in New York. He primarily develops video installations, virtual reality art works and public projects, which bridge physical and digital worlds. He is concerned with how imagination, technology and ecology intertwine and he develops futuristic virtual simulations of existing real-world landscapes. To make his work, Steensen ventures on intense excursions where he collects organic material and photographs plants, rocks and sediments. He converts the collected material into digital worlds by the use of 3D scanners, photogrammetry, satellite data and computer game software to make virtual simulations. Inspired by ecology-oriented science fiction and conversations with biologists and ethnographers, he transforms abstract concepts and new perspectives on nature into playful sensory installations, which people can enter and explore. Steensen often collaborates with studios, animators, musicians, performers, writers and biologists with the purpose of developing new ecological perspectives.

Jakob Kudsk has recently exhibited at Jepson Center for the Arts, Time Square for the Midnight Moment, at Carnegie Museum of Art,  Serpentine Galleries for the annual marathon, The Moving Image Fair, NYC, MAXXI, WIRED annual conference, FRIEZE in London, Podium in Oslo, Ok Corral in Copenhagen, 86 Project Space, Brooklyn, Sleep Center, China Town and at London Science Museum. As the art director, designer and environmental artist on the VR project TREE VR, made with The Rainforest Alliance and NEW REALITY CO, Steensen’s has shown at Sundance and TriBeCa film festival. His work has been featured in MOUSSE Magazine, on Artnet, The Art Newspaper, Hyperallergic, Spike Art Quaterly, ARTREPORT, Politiken, Information, Worm, NEO2, VICE, NY Times, WIRED and TSOEG. He has received awards from the Danish Arts Foundation, The Augustinus Foundation, and Lumen Arts Price. He has been artist in residence at Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, AADK, Centra Negra, MASS MoCA, BRIC and Mana Contemporary.

Jakob Kudsk Steensen is currently a 2017-2018 member of NEW INC, a technology and culture incubator by The NEW MUSEUM, in NYC.
